Groove Creator

problem

Music has always been one of the most universal forms of human expression, and yet the tools required to make it have always belonged to a small group of people with the right training, the right equipment, and the right technical vocabulary. As platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook were turning everyday people into video creators, photographers, and writers, music creation remained locked behind a steep wall of complexity. The opportunity wasn't just a missing app. It was a cultural gap, a world where everyone had something to say musically but almost no one had a way to say it.

solution

I joined a team in Seattle charged with democratizing music creation for Windows users, and led the design of Groove Creator, an AI-assisted platform built around one deceptively simple idea: capturing a creator's intent. Rather than asking users to learn music theory, the platform met them where they were. A playlist, a hummed rhythm, a genre picked on a whim, any of these could become a seed. From that seed, the system generated stems in the cloud, rendered in the style of a chosen virtual producer modeled after some of the most influential artists in contemporary music. Users could add melodies, beatbox new parts, and shape their sound with touch and pen, with AI handling the rest invisibly. Completed tracks lived in a Remix Community for sampling and collaboration, with blockchain underpinning a new model for royalties and ownership. And when ambitions grew, a single tap handed everything off to a professional DAW.

Use your voice as input

What if making music felt less like learning an instrument and more like having a conversation?

Everyone has a song in them. Almost no one knows how to get it out.

The goal wasn't to build a tool for musicians. It was to build a tool for everyone else, the person who hums in the shower, the teenager who makes videos but wishes the music was theirs, the creator who has taste but not training.

Choose your "seed"

Start anywhere.

A playlist you love. A genre you feel. A rhythm you tap out on your desk. The system takes whatever you give it and treats it as the beginning of something.

Cloud rendered stems

The producer comes to you.

Stems are rendered in the cloud, shaped by the stylistic signature of a chosen virtual producer modeled on the sensibility of some of the most influential voices in contemporary music. No studio required. No negotiation required.

Touch and Pen modulation

Shape it. Own it.

Add a melody. Beatbox a part. The system listens, corrects, and fits what you give it into the structure of what you're building. Touch and pen give the experience a tactile quality, something between playing an instrument and sculpting sound.

Then let it go.

Share it in the Remix Community. Let someone else sample it, build on it, take it somewhere you never would have. A new model for musical ownership, tracked through blockchain, monetized fairly, distributed freely.

And when you're ready for more, the door to professional production is already open.

MY ROLE

I led the design of the platform end to end, from the core interaction model through to the visual language and user journey. Central to my contribution was the creation of a unique interface lexicon for capturing creative intent through natural language inputs, one of the genuinely novel design challenges of the project. I also worked closely with the Creative Director to conceive and produce a One Line Concept video that dramatized the full user journey, using two central characters, the creator and the song itself, to show how a simple idea could blossom into something complete. The video became the primary artifact for communicating the product vision internally and with stakeholders, a role I've come to see as one of the most important a design leader can play.
